Tropical Treat On M Street

On Wednesday, June 24th the Qi (pronounced chee) Spa in Georgetown will be throwing a Hawaiian themed Luau party with some spa treatments that definitely sound like a trip to paradise!

Put on your brightest and most tropical attire and head to the spa at 3106 M Street, NW on the second floor from 4 to 7pm and you'll enter a world of leis, Hawaiian music, food and drink...as well as a chance to enter a raffle for a coconut bra to wear if you get to visit the actual island!!

In the meantime you'll be able to sample services like the Lomi Lomi massage, Bee's Thai massage or Qi Spa's newest service which is an Infrared Slim Sauna Wrap. The wrap's radiant heat stimulates metabolism, relaxes muscles and promotes detoxification. Follow with a green coffee slimming body treatment and/or a Swedish with gold oil or a deep tissue massage with mint oil. If you decide it's a treatment you can't live without you'll be able to experience it for half price with any other spa treatment.

Owner Ophelia Zhou say the party is intended to kick off what the spa is calling their "Lady's Day" each Wednesday this summer with special snacks and beverages and their upstairs exclusive
ly devoted to the ladies. They'll offer a Bella package of a one hour massage and express facial for $130 plus and surprise specials each week from their therapists.

This is the perfect opportunity to channel your inner hula girl and find your little slice of paradise this Wednesday and get a preview of why Wednesdays will become your favorite day this summer!

Beauty That Will Beat The Heat

Most of us love summer and all the fun that comes with spending more time outside and at the beach--but our makeup and hair might not have the same positive reaction to the elements. So we consulted a talented local member of Sephora's Pro Beauty team who we're lucky enough to have based in our area at the Sephora in Tysons mall.

Jerry
is just one of 14 members of the National Artistry team for Sephora in North America so he's definitely one of the most experienced when it comes to knowing what works in every beauty situation.

Here are his picks for our hair and face that will keep us looking good even during the worst of DC humidity when we're reminded the city was built on a swamp!

When it comes to controlling frizz and flyaways Jerry recommends No Frizz by Living Proof. The product is a definite must because it wall save you from fearful frizz with it's patented silicone free technology. Plus, this item is very versatile, available in travel or full size. "Straight Making" or "Wave Shaping" and in three different formulas for fine, medium and thick to coarse hair. Cost is $14 to $24 depending on what size you choose.

Another product on his list for protecting our hair is especially for color treated hair. Jerry recommends protecting our locks from sun and chlorine while adding moisture and shine with Oscar Blandi's Capri Sun Shield Spray. It's a Sephora exclusive and is $20 for 8 0z.

To keep makeup looking flawless, Jerry considers this product one of his summer essentials. Define your eyes all day long with the new Sephora Retractable Waterproof Liner. Draw a quick line or smoke it out with the blending tip, either way this liner is going nowhere. This melt-proof must have is available in 8 shades for only $12 each.

Always a favorite he also recommends Dior Show Mascara! This summer Dior has a new follow-up mascara called the Dior Show Iconic Extreme with a new waterproof formula guaranteed to give you the high intensity volume of faux lashes with the staying power of being waterproof. This new version of a favorite mascara costs $27.00.

And lastly check out the Sephora Bronze 'N Go Kit that has everything you need to achieve that happy waterfront face. The five piece set is a must with travel size waterproof eyeliner and mascara, complete with Super Shimmer gloss, Harmony Trio Bronzer and a brush to apply. All in a onvenient summer Calypso pouch--a $65 dollar value for only $30. It's limited so buy it soon if you want the glow!

A big thanks to Jerry for the excellent tips and I know I'll be heading to the nearest Sephora with my list of summer essentials before things start to really heat up--see you there! Of course you can always purchase the items and get more information at their website (www.sephora.com).

Botox Is Not A Party Favor!

The idea of a group of girlfriends pampering themselves with a spa party at home is one we all find pretty enticing...and getting a group together for mani/pedis, facials and massages is about as good as it gets!

But is it a good idea to introduce something like Botox into the same setting and are there some problems that could result?

There has been some publicity about how much fun and economical it can be to get rid of your lines while enjoying a fun evening of eating and drinking at a Botox party in your home with your girlfriends, but Dr. Roberta Palestine, founder and medical director of the Dermatology & Clinical Skin Care Center in Bethesda, MD (www.dermskin.com) cautions that you could regret attending one.

Although Botox is very effective at smoothing wrinkles, especially our frown area and crow's feet, it's also a potent substance that is better done in a medical setting where the conditions and enviornment are more controlled.

And although most people tolerate Botox very well with no problems or complications, Dr. Palestine says that certain medical conditions and medications are contraindications to Botox so a medical record and documentation should occur which can be lacking in a party atmosphere. Alcohol is often being served at these parties so the instructions to stay upright for 4 hours is more difficult to ensure and there have been TV clips showing Botox syringes laying right next to the hors d'oeuvres! Not to mention that placement of Botox in the right area is important but may be compromised in an house setting with less than optimal lighting.

So although Botox is great and so are wine and cheese parties maybe they're not so great together. Most doctors, including Dr. Palestine, are more than happy to accommodate a group of friends coming to the office to receive their Botox and offer each other support. That might be the better and safer way to have the experience with your friends and save the living room for all that other pampering you deserve!
