Taming and Shaping the Brow--The Best Kits

Eyebrows are getting lots of attention these days--and the consensus for fall is a thicker and more defined brow. I've heard many times that brows frame your face and can make a huge difference in how you look but I don't think I really believed it until I had my brows done professionally.

Daiva at Salon Roi is one of the best at brow tinting and shaping-- she is a perfectionist who meticulously shapes, tweezes and tints and manages to create a perfect looking brow where there were just some sparse hairs--she is truly an eyebrow magician!

In between appointments, when left to our own devices it might be worth investing in some of the kits and tools available in stores and here are some of the latest:

The Hollywood eyebrow guru to the stars is Anastasia http://www.anastasia.net. Apparently many A-listers can't be seen on the red carpet without a trip to her Beverly Hills salon. If that's a bit beyond your budget you can purchase one of her 31 different eyebrow related products in beauty and department stores.

In the interest of space here is the most comprehensive kit she offers--the 7 Item Brow Book. It's apparently like having a brow salon at home and has seven pieces including tweezers, brow powder duo, 4 brow stencils, dual ended brush, brow gel and highlighting pencil. It's a $161.oo value for $85.00 right now at Nordstrom.

A company called Billion Dollar Brows http://www.billiondollarbrows.com has a tool that is much less expensive than the name and has been featured in many magazines and tv shows. Their claim to fame is the Brow Buddy tool--which creates an arch by taking into account your face shape to give you symmetrical, beautifully shaped brows. They also have a salon in Beverly Hills (are you sensing a theme?) but their kit is available locally at Beauty 360--the beauty product store owned by CVS that carries prestige and niche brands. The Brow Buddy Kit includes the tool, brush, sharpener, white pencil and an instructional guide plus DVD. The kit is $35 and is available at Beauty 360 at 1350 Connecticut Avenue, NW at Dupont Circle.

Benefit Cosmetics has a kit they call Brows A Go-Go that includes tools for your brows and eyes combined. In this kit you'll get 2 shades of brow powder, brow wax, min-tweezers, brush, how to guide plus liner, eyebright and highlighter powder for the brow bone. The kit is $38.00 and is available at http://www.benefitcosmetics.com.

Then there is the website that let's you create your own kit based on the shape and type of eyebrows you have or want. It's a bit like the dress up kits you had as a kid where you could change the outfits on the cutout. For $43.60 the site http://www.eybrowz.com let's you customize your kit with a choice of stencils from 100 plus different shapes (who knew there were that many!) , stencil holder, 2 eyebrow powders, white pencil, 3 brushes, instructions and pouch to keep it all together.

Local Stylist Follows Her Passion for Perfume

Henrieta Dzurikaninova's path to creating her own line of perfume's sounds a little like a fairy tale. And it was a movie that led her to carrying out her lifelong dream.

Henrieta has her own business called Fabulous Inc. www.fabulousincorporated.com and is a personal shopper, stylist and advisor.

As the Slovak Republic native and current Washingtonian relates the story in her own words, " I always loved fragrances and cosmetics in general from a very young age ( my father always laughs at me that I loved to be pampered since the day I was born ). I have been thinking about launching my own perfume once my business was successful, but it was just a dream.... at the beginning of last June I was working as a stylist on a movie and I visited Bloomingdale's in New York.

As I was walking around I got lost and I ended up at Fragrance section, and I was asked by a woman if I would like to create my perfume. I looked at her so surprised, thinking she could read my mind and said yes, but I have to study first and I'm planning to go to France to take classes.... she said I could create one on the spot and asked what I liked. Without thinking I mentioned various flower scents that are my favorites. They blended what I told them and were blown away, telling me it was wonderful, sexy and different, and that they had never smelled anything like that. When I returned home I started to do the research and 2 months later I decided to order oils and bottles. One morning after a really hard day at work I woke up with this crazy energy and the feeling that I had to mix a perfume. I started to mix the scents, created the packaging and by the evening I had three perfumes!"

The result are three fragrances: Fabulous Inc. has notes of jasmine, Fabulous by Henrieta notes of orange blossom and Fabulous Her notes of orchid. Every perfume is personally mixed by Henrieta and every bottle gets her handmade attention.

All three perfumes are 100% Pure Oils , no alcohol or dilutants added. Bottles don't have pump, so they are environmentally friendly and sell for $50 for 1 oz. They are currently available at Sangaree Boutique, 3288 M Street, NW and Green and Blue Boutique, 1350 Connecticut Avenue, NW with other locations coming soon.

Staying Fit In DC With Trainer To Moms

Staying fit can be a challenge for all Washington area men and women. Busy careers and nights out might take priority over fitness and exercise. Add a new baby or one on the way to the equation and it gets even trickier to stay in shape or regain your pre-pregnancy body.

Vionna Jones http://www.fitindc.com made the switch from civil engineering to certified personal trainer and started Fit in DC in 2005 to focus on the needs of personal clients. In addition to working one on one she teaches yoga, yoga for children, prenatal yoga, prenatal fitness and Pilates. Although she has all types of clients she especially likes working with expectant and new mothers. She operates out of City Fitness in Cleveland Park in Washington and Hot Mama Fitness in Bethesda, MD.

I asked her about her tips for staying fit and an upcoming event she's sponsoring in the new year.

BeautyInDC.com: What type of training and how often does someone have to maintain to lose weight?

Vionna: Each person will have a different path to losing weight. It depends on each individual's needs. The important part is to make sure that the amount of calories burned during a day is more than the amount of calories taken in during a day. This means that not only does a person need to exercise to burn calories, but he/she has to decrease the calories consumed in a healthy and purposeful way. Exercise alone will not do it. However, Everyone should exercise on most days of the week for at least 30 minutes. Also, Weight training is just as important as cardiovascular activity.

BeautyInDC.com: The new year will be here before we know it and a lot of us make resolutions about getting fit--tell us about the event you're sponsoring this January to give us the incentive to make 2010 our best year?

Vionna: As a self-employed woman, I notice that I often sacrifice doing things for myself because I feel that I should be doing something related to my business. I am sure you can relate to that. However, since I am a fitness professional, one thing that I absolutely won't sacrifice are my daily workouts and my healthy eating habits. But I know that many other women do.

Because of this fact, my colleague Kimberly Rush Lynch, of Cultivating Health, and I have designed a retreat to help busy women like ourselves learn how they can make their own health and well-being a priority.

This weekend retreat will take place at the Historic Kent Manor Inn in Stevensville, Maryland. If we're going be helpful to others we must FIRST nourish ourselves.

This weekend retreat will be an opportunity to get support around making you a priority and bringing more joy into your life. Kick back, take a deep breath and explore a more positive relationship with fitness and food. You'll learn how physical activity and mindful eating can be great self-nourishment and personal empowerment tools that you can incorporate into your daily routine easily. Bring a friend and experience the benefits of having a support system to hold you accountable for the life changing commitments that you will make to yourself during this retreat.

To learn more about the retreat, please see our website at: http://www.fitindc.com/freespirit.com.

Although we say that the retreat is for executives and entrepreneurs, this event is beneficial for all busy women who would like to make their own health and fitness a priority. It will make a great gift for any woman that you know who is looking to become healthy!

Strike Gold or Silver With Mineral Makeup

Jane Iredale http://www.janeiredale.com was the first to supply medispas, plastic surgeons and dermatologists with a full line of makeup based on minerals and saw the advantage of offering them makeup that was good for the skin.

After microdermabrasion, a chemical peel or laser treatment when the skin might still be a bit red and sensitive this is the kind of makeup that is soothing enough to wear while hiding the effects of the procedure.

But beyond that it's makeup for everyday and any occasion. There are always new Iredale products and colors that reflect the current trends just like any other cosmetics/skin care company.

Dermatology & Clinical Skin Care Center http://www.dermskin.com will be featuring Jane Iredale National Makeup Artist and Educator Angela this Monday for free makeovers and one on one makeup applications. See all the details below and here are some products from their Silver Lining collection:

Silver Lining features three complimenatry shades in an intense pigment formula and would be perfect for creating the smokey eye trend that is huge this season.

Silver Liquid Eyeliner could instantly add some glamour to your daytime makeup if you're going straight from the office to a holiday party. It's chemical free but is quick drying and long lasting.

Hazelnut Pure Gloss is a warmer metallic in a sparkling nutmeg shade with a touch of copper. IT also has a touch of mint and ginger to plump the lips naturally.

Double Dazzle Dual Highlighter Pencil is a multitasking gold and copper highlighting pencil. Use it on cheekbones and brow bones or to line the eyes or lips.

Products & Services Going "Pink" In October

October is going pink once again as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Each year it seems the attention is growing which is a promising sign. Almost everyone has either been affected directly or indirectly by this terrible disease which will strike one in eight women at some point in their lives. But the positive news is that the 5 year survival rate is ninety eight percent if the disease is caught early. Hopefully all of this focus will encourage women to be screened and hopefully all of the money raised will help fund research and eventually lead to a cure.

Quite a few beauty companies are offering limited edition products this month with a portion of the proceeds going various breast cancer charities and one local medspa is offering a special facial and event to highlight the cause.

Jane Iredale's PureMoist Lipcolour in Christina is named after Christina Applegate, the actress who is a breast cancer survivor. The price is $19 and $2 of each lipstick sold benefits Living Beyond Breast Cancer, with a minimum commitment of $25,000 in the coming year. The color looks good on just about everyone and comes packaged in a pretty, bright pink tube. It's also a state of the art liposome formula packs your lips with moisture, color and provides an SPF 15. Available at many local spas and cosmetic doctor's offices as well as at www.janeiredale.com.

Cosmetic company Estee Lauder is offering a Pink Ribbon Collection featuring a pin, compact and
the Elizabeth Hurley Lip Collection. Included are a lipstick, gloss, blush and pink case with a mirror. There are two versions--one is a more muted shade of rose and the other is a brighter shade of pink. The sets are $22.00 and are available at just about every major department store in the area.

Well known makup artist Sonia Kashuk who has created a line for Target is herself a breast cancer survivor and has found a beautiful way to raise funds and awareness. Her makeup brushes get great reviews and she and Target are offering her 4 piece BCRF Brush Up on Pink Purse Set with fifteen percent of the $12.99 price going to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Available at Target stores or at www.target.com.

One local medspa is also trying to give back in several ways. Radiance Medspa DC in Columbia Heights' Harmony Facial is dedicated to bringing skin back to life for women who are undergoing treatments like chemo or radiation. It can also work for anyone with senstive skin or other issues and $10 of each one purchased this month will go to Passionately Pink for the Cure (a Susan G. Komen charity). There will also be a free mineral makeup application with each treatment.

Radiance DC will wrap up this Breast Cancer Awareness Month on October 31st with their Cancer Care Event. The event will feature special product lines formulated to address the unique concerns for cancer patients including uneven complexion, acne, burns, chafing and scar tissue. www.radicancedc.com.

Chocolate and Beauty Obsessions Merge

Your chocolate and beauty obsessions can now be combined in one little square...

All the press about the antioxidant benefits of dark chocolate had already removed any guilt we might have about eating a sweet treat. After all, it's almost a necessary part of our anti-aging routine based on all of the claims.

Now a new product on the market takes it to another level, calling itself the "healthy chocolate." Xocai, www.thehealthychocolatechick.com offers not only the antioxidant benefits but also says it can increase energy levels and lead to lasting weight loss.

I found out that 3 Xocai power squares are equivalent in nutrients to two and a half pounds of fruit and veggies and besides it's benefits on skin and anti-aging it also has a good effect on blood pressure, mental ability and the list goes on and on. Quite a convincing case ...even though they already had me at chocolate!

Apparently what makes Xocai different than other dark chocolates on the market is the processing system. Most "healthy" chocolate is heat pressed which destroys 75 to 80% of the vital nutrients in cacao. But Xocai combines raw, unprocessed cacao from the Ivory Coast of Africa with the acai berry of the Amazon rainforest which are two of the highest rated antioxidant food sources in the world. And it is then cold pressed so it results in a gourmet dark chocolate which retains 100% of the vital nutrients.

You buy Xocai from a distributor It's available in boxes of squares that have different formulations and retail for about $150.00. They also offer cookies, bars and shakes. In our area you can buy it from The Healthy Chocolate Chick at www.thehealthychocolatechick.com.
