A Glitzy Makeup Routine For The Holidays

Are you in the mood for some glitz and glamour? The holiday party season is the perfect time to dress up and show your sparkly alter ego. And your makeup should fit the look, so we went to the experts at Sephora to find out how to add some glitter to your face and skin.

Jeffrey English is a professional makeup artist whose creative use of color and technical skill have earned him a top spot on the elite Sephora 2010 PRO Beauty team.

Jeffrey shares his favorite products, tools and technique's with BeautyInDC.com readers who want to shine this season:

Q: What are some makeup trends for this winter and especially for the holidays?

A: This year we are noticing three key trends for the perfect holiday look. First, we have the sparkling lip. This involves taking any loose glitter (try Make Up For Ever Glitters; $13) and pressing it into a creamy lipstick or gloss for a great effect. Or, a simpler way to achieve this look would be to use a gorgeous, glittering gloss like the Sephora Ultra Shine Lip Gloss in 02 Reflex Frosty White ($14)

Next, we have the multicolored eye for holiday. I love using a variety of different textures and colors of eyeshadows to create a dramatic look. Palettes like the TARINA TARANTINO Jewel Box Palette ($78)) are a great way to experiment with new color combinations since they are comprised of a variety of harmonious colors and textures.

Lastly, the sultry, smoky eye is always a fantastic holiday look. Here you will see lots of deeper colors of layered eye shadows to create a well-blended, smoky effect. A great way to update the traditional smoky eye is to use more modern colors like purple.

Q: Can you suggest a few easy ways to transition your look from office to party?

A: My favorite way to upgrade your look from day to night is to put on a little glitz & glamour! I love to press on the TARINA TARANTINO Sparklicity Pure Gold ($19) on top of any eye look with a flat eyeshadow brush to draw instant attention to those gorgeous gazers! And it doesn’t stop there – the Sephora Glitter Spray ($10) is a shimmering spray for body and hair and will add a gorgeous sparkle to any holiday style. And if you want to add some sparkle all the way from your head to your toes, try the Sephora by OPI Top Coat in Flurry Up ($9) Another great way to transition from a day in the office to a night out on the town is to apply a set of fabulous false lashes. This will offer a dramatic look in a very subtle way.

Q: Are there ways to use glitter and sparkle in a way that’s not too obvious or overboard?

A: Absolutely. An amazing, yet subtle, way to integrate glitter into your beauty look is to merely apply a glitter liner right along the lower lash line and on the outer corner of the eye. This gives a twinkle to the eye in an understated way that will immediately make your eyes pop! Try the tokidoki Glitter Eyeliner Set ($25). A great PRO Artist tip is that if you ever want to remove any glitter or refine your sparkle, use a silicone based primer to pick it right up!

Q: Which products would achieve a holiday “glow” the best?

A: There are two ways to approach achieving a holiday “glow” – you can introduce a radiance boosting moisturizer into your daily skincare routine or applying bronzing and luminizing products into your makeup regimen. The Sephora Favorites Glitz & Glam Shimmer and Shine Makeup Deluxe Sampler ($39) has everything you need to add a little luminosity to your skin. This dazzling makeup collection includes 11 popular bronze colors and complexion-illuminating products like the NARS Orgasm Illuminator and Josie Maran Bronzing Argan Oil. By applying a luminizer to the top of your cheek bone you generate a lot of dimension and draw even more attention to the gorgeous eye area.
