TBD RECAP and Deals for Deeds

TBD RECAP:  This week Vanessa and Markette talk about how the iPhone is revolutionizing accessories by way of "glittens." Then it's all about Playtime with DJ Neekola at District in Adams Morgan, things are changing with the "don't ask don't tell policy" when it comes to hair weaves and extensions and then  find out who fedora wearing movie critic--Arch Campbell's celebrity doppelganger is!

SOCIAL GIVING:
It seems as though the buzz word for over the past year has been the word "SOCIAL." It's been used over and over and over and from what I gather; it's  here to stay. Let's see there's social media, social networking, not to mention the hit movie "The Social Network" the company and website Living Social and then there is the act of being socially conscience. But have you heard of SOCIAL GIVING? No, OK well  think in terms of the movie "Pay it Forward" yes with that cute little Haley Joel Osment who's all grown up now (but hopefully still paying it forward)

combined with a deal site like Groupon or Living Social (only think more hyperlocal)

combined with a good cause and ah ha "social giving" by way of Deals for Deeds is born.

DD is a business model rooted in charitable giving. This business provides a mechanism to give back that is straightforward, instant and tangible. Community business create an exclusive offer for Deal for Deeds members, with a built-in-charitable component. Proceeds from every purchase go toward helping a non-profit organization achieve a specific goal. Whether it's 500 meals for the homeless or a new swing set for the neighborhood park, collectively they strive to make a difference and in just a week, according to their Website.

University of Pennsylvania alums and childhood friends, Josh Hoffman and Harrison Miller, (both DC natives) are the brains behind this new local "social" digital commerce platform.

Deals for Meals Week (www.dealsfordeeds.com) will take place January 10-16, 2011. The week of deals will feature some of the DC area's most popular restaurants and bars, and 10% of each purchase will directly support Food & Friends. Along with nutritional counseling, Food & Friends prepares, packages and delivers meals and groceries to more than 2,800 people living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-challenging illnesses throughout the Washington, DC region. The goal of the week is to raise $750, which will provide a full month of meals for their client Food & Friends.

"We're really excited about the line-up of deals we've put together for Deals for Meals Week, and think the community will be as well" says co-founder Josh Hoffman.

I am all over Tuesday's deal. Love me some Hello cupcakes. OK I hope that you the socially conciensce consumer will grab and save on some awesome deals and help pay it forward towards a good cause.

And speaking of deals did anybody catch the TLC program "Extreme Couponing" which profiles shopaholics who use coupons to save thousands of dollars and amass huge stockpiles of goods? These shoppers go to the extremes, dumpster diving for coupons and spending hours a day searching the Internet for great deals.

Watch extreme couponer Carol as she checks out and saves.

OK so I wouldn't exactly go to these saving extremes but I will be sure to check out Deals for Deeds and other money saving sites like Groupon and Living Social.

Happy spending and saving!

That's all from DC ON HEELS "Bringing you the best in food, fashion and fun in the metro area."
